Secrets and Lies

Every credit has its debit, every positive its negative. So for every secret there must be a lie, and every lie must be kept secret.

This is the currency of power today. Fiat truth.

We are not allowed to have any secrets any more.  And yet those who insist they must know the truth about us, who spy upon us to extract our secrets, tell us in return, only lies.

It is a dangerous, corroding imbalance of power, because lies, like debts, compound.

Living the lie

We all know the famous Goebbels quote,

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it.

From Sadam’s weapons of mass destruction and missiles that could hit us in just 40 minutes of sexed up bullshit, to the stress tests that show us every bank is perfectly solvent and however many billions they launder they are never guilty and no one goes to gaol because they are too big to fail and too connected to even question.

The eye of providence looks out and approves of what is done – Annuit cœptis.

But who does the all seeing eye, that sits atop  the pyramid of power on the mighty dollar bill, work for now? Is it really you and me?  That is what we are told to believe. But is it true? I think there are too many secrets but few of them are yours and mine.

The private dealings of the ordinary citizen are considered suspect and must, we are told, be rooted out. The secrets and outright lies of the corporate and governmental worlds, however – they are confidential. They are protected – behind razor-wire threats of  legal action and closed door tribunals of hand picked experts.

A few weeks ago I sat and listened to the former leader of the Conservative party, now an elder statesman of British politics, Michael Howard, tell an audience that governments need to lie. He is a clever man. He quoted Goebbels and then gave this carefully chosen example.

Imagine, he said, that a Chancellor knew that he was going to have to devalue the currency. The evening before the appointed hour, he is asked by a journalist if he is going to devalue. If he tells the truth and says yes, there will be a run on the currency and great damage will be done. So he lies. “No”, he says, “I have absolutely no plans to devalue at all.” And then next morning he devalues as he had planned.

“Was this not”, Mr Howard asked, “the right thing, the only thing to do?” And all agreed it was. The unspoken lesson that everyone seemed to accept was stability is more important than the truth.

I find this a very frightening notion.

But Mr Howard presented his lie well. He went on to quote the next, less well known line from the Goebbels quote.

The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie.

And this, he said smiling at us, is what protects you. The chancellor’s lie only needed to last a few hours. The nation only lived inside his lie overnight.

But now think of the lies we have been told since 2008. Our banking system and the  banks in it, we were told, were basically sound just suffering from a shortage of liquidity. And yet, in reality, it was not a problem of  liquidity, it was insolvency.

The liquidity lie had to be rolled over and the interest on it, paid. So another lie, that  bank assets were not worthless just ‘impaired’, had to be told and maintained. And to do that the truth had to be hidden, off balance sheet, in mark to model and offshore.

Our governments have spent trillions maintaining their lies and have forced us to live those lies for five years now. But there are costs. Living a lie is morally and politically corrosive, not to mention expensive.  Just this week, as reported in the FT, the Italian Treasury ‘uncovered’ a nest of lies. It appears that the Italian government, in the run up to joining the euro,  paid at least one of the big banks to help it hide the true extent of its debts by agreeing  derivative swaps. Greece used similar swaps to massage its debts. The now infamous Titlos agreement with Goldman Sachs being the best known.

The Italian agreements – there were several amounting to around €36 billion in value – would have been known to Mario Draghi who was at the time of some of the agreements at least  (1998-9) Secretary of the Treasury. Shortly after this (2002) he left the government and joined Goldman.

It now turns out the terms of the agreements were such that the Italian tax payer could face billions in losses. Of course those who will be forced to pay, were never consulted, not even told of the agreements. They were …confidential of course. Commercially sensitive and politically secret – so often bedfellows aren’t they? Kept secret from those who would be required to pay the bill when it came due.

Our leaders, our liars, haven’t bothered to protect us from the consequences of the lies at all. Too expensive. So austerity, disparity and stagnation are everywhere around us. Forced on us by those who suffer none of them, insulated as they are by wealth and power and privilege. Consequences are for little people, not their Betters.

Our ‘Betters’ have found Goebbels was wrong. You don’t have to protect the people from the consequences of the lies you tell them, as long as you can blame those consequences on someone else. On unforeseen global economic forces, on conniving foreigners who devalue their currency, or terrorists or whistleblowers. Or even the people themselves for taking on debts they couldn’t afford or on ‘necessity’ and ‘precedent’ – the bond holders cannot be made to pay – it goes against international precedent.

We, the people, need to strike back at the secret deals done between the elites of  the political and financial revolving door, and make it clear that we will not pay for anything about which we were not told.

Once the cry was, “No taxation without representation”. Today the cry must be, “No debt without consultation.”

Suppressing the Truth

What Mr Howard did not quote is the next line from Goebbels.

It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”

But again Goebbels has been superceded. Repression is so last century. Why repress when you can simply drown it out. All it takes is for the media outlets to be owned by a few powerful and like- minded friends. A few media moguls and corporate giants, whose plastic pundits raise their voices while the dolly bird presenters flash their thighs. It’s all so full throttle and frantic, and charged with desire and greed.

Anyone who disagrees is a conspiracy theorist. Anyone who breaks ranks is a whistleblower and whistleblowers are domestic terrorists, dysfunctional loners with personality problems and axes to grind.

When the truth is vilified, hunted, gagged and goaled, then the State has chosen to go to war with the nation.

We are at war.

  1. Perhaps the term ‘ Lest we forget ‘ & all that goes with it should be expanded to include those things you mention above. The Jews have made a determined effort to keep the Holocaust within World consciousness in an effort to prevent the same old cycle being repeated ( shame about the Gaza ghetto ), if we ever get out of this period of more bullshit than usual, perhaps an effort should be made to further extend the parameters of what we should not forget & how certain behaviour inevitably leads to repression.

‘Education is dangerous – every educated person is a future enemy’.
    Hermann Goering.

We can learn from these psychopathic turds & if we are not the losers, write a history that shows the warning signs so as it would be obvious to anyone when the first signs of these cancers become apparent. Open centres that highlight the fact that this present behaviour has serious consequences for mankind & the planet, use the Arts, work with schools whatever, show cause & effect & educate.

“Naturally the common people don’t want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY.”

Goering is an acknowleged evil prick, if we can use him & other socio/psychopaths behaviour & actions as a benchmark to compare with our present bunch of greedy psychos & careerists, fat or otherwise it might do some good. If it were only to make something like the Iraq war less likely to happen it would I think be worth the effort. Obviously David you are all ready trying to do this.

Blair is a rep for JP Morgan rather than Citi, but Nuff Said.

  2. Thirst for the truth has to remain a most noble human endeavor. Conversely the deceivers are failing to qualify as human beings. I am not sure what ‘they’ are, possibly aliens. Falsehoods and deceit are not the language of a genuine human being.

  4. How is it Britain has become such a docile race? Never before in my lifetime have I witnessed street beggars, workfare, food banks, rising profits, falling wages, people training to be servants, illiterate youngsters, corrupt police, bankers, MP’s,health officials, unemployed graduates with debts of £60,000 (which can never be repaid) corrupt media, unaffordable trains and still with the 3 major parties in agreement that the system must be saved. I fear that should some demagogue arise, as did Hitler during the German slump, people will follow. Is that where we are being led? Is that the reason for all the street cameras, spies in the sky, phone and internet tapping, secret courts and laws and the beefing up of the intelligence services? All dissent is being suppressed. When it is, we shall all be slaves.

    1. I heard a young man on the tram last night describe how he’d just got a minimum wage job but he didn’t mind because ”the taxman won’t get any of it” (his earnings being too low to go over the personal tax allowance). That’s some twisted logic for a person who will need public services much more than a corporate automaton.

      1. The corporate automaton may pay her income taxes but her salary comes from the profits of her corporate employer that pays little in taxes while reaping much in government subsidies, most of them hidden.

  5. “…Macbeth is the story of Hitler or Napoleon. But it is also the story of any bank clerk who forges a cheque, any official who takes a bribe, and human being in fact who grabs at some mean advantage which will make him feel a little bigger than and get a little ahead of his fellows. It centres on the illusory human belief that an action can be isolated–that you can say to yourself, ‘I will commit just this one crime which will get me where I want to be, and and after that I will turn respectable.’ But in practice, as Macbeth discovers, one crime grows out of another, even without any increase if wickedness in yourself. His first murder is committed for self-advancement; the even worse ones which follow from it are committed in self-defense.” George Orwell _Orwell, The Lost Writings_

This is how you can tell a ‘white’ lie from ‘black’ lies, which seem to grow in number just as one crime grows out of another.

  6. You have to be one hell of a psychopath to not only want to control the world but to control evolution.

For millennia religions have tried and failed. Now its the turn of the secular inner temples to promote their gods of mythical money founded on a foundation of lies, deceit and deception and where all of them relies on a mortar of apathy as the bond which retains the myth of their structural integrity.

One way or another I don’t thinks that’s a mix that will advance the cause of either civilization or, in the longer term evolution. Unless of course you are one of the psychopaths who believe their mind-set portrays the zenith of evolutionary possibilities.

Will we end up as slaves? Some will, but most will find the construction, advertised as an asylum, is in fact an abattoir.

    1. Yeah, agreed…one of his best no doubt.

The historical references do it for me. Goebbels words, and history repeating. Words maybe studied and used for the ills ends that lay up ahead… we’re most likely in the thick of it now.

Here’s hoping the age of access sees in a new enlightenment… the average age of CNN’s viewer is 60+ I saw somewhere the other day, so it cannot be far away one would imagine. At some point critical mass is reached, where the invisible septic tank we’re all fed from is exposed due to overflow.

  7. How long before we are like the recent ITV program on the workhouse, and they have the right to send our dead bodies to be used for medical science like they used to in Victorian times, if you were poor.
Just watched a Scottish parliamentary debate where the Labour and Tory parties joined forces to push for austerity against the SNP. Not only is there no difference between the 3 main parties, makes you wonder why they lie anyway no one notices apart from a noisy powerless tiny minority.
We need a new political and financial model, and debt free money is the way to go, some interesting thoughts from Byron Dale at http://www.wealthmoney.org . There was nothing wrong with clause 4 when it is applied on a small scale as at John Lewis, its just did not work so well when the politicians administered it. With or without clause 4 they can still not run the country or any other business but they can still line their own pockets and those of their mates. It’s unbelievable we have a chancellor whose only non-political work experience is folding towels for a few days.

Our great collective weapon is the repudiation of debt. When a critical mass of people refuse to take on new debt, the financial system comes crashing down upon itself. “They” will issue more and more debt, but it will not be enough. “They” have lured this generation with easy to receive but impossible to discharge student debt. Let every individual refuse the easy path which is the road to hell and take the true road to freedom – No More Debt and We Will Win.

  10. Thanks Golem XIV, for this and all the other posts.
Like reading Noam Chomsky again, it makes me feel very queasy but it must be done!

It’s interesting that in the UK we have recently had most of our law-courtly supervisory powers removed to all intents and purposes. The timing could not be “better”!

Actually I just wanted to add my important point [I think] that we need not concern ourselves with the psychopathic side of our “masters” behaviour. But rather we need to concern ourselves more with the on-going systemic nature of our deceit by “masters and servants” who are not at all psychopathic. Just the normal run of the mill camp guards, as it were.
All that is necessary for evil to succeed is for good men to stand aside; although I also would not use the word evil. It’s too convenient; I would substitute “the self perpetuating, self enriching, self justifying system”.
Not quite the same ring to it though. However there is a dreary sense of inevitability instead.
PS. I am quite a positive person normally. I’m not sure why…

  11. Excellent article!

… Here is some of my kind of typical bla, bla, blah in response …

We were ALWAYS at war, and the vast majority have ALWAYS been losing, ever more and worse. Indeed, the deepest ways that people were taught to think were backwards, thereby enabling them to be defrauded.

The oldest book on the Art of War starts by saying that “success in war is based on deceit” and ends by saying that “spies are the most important soldiers.” That was the foundation of Neolithic Civilization. The grand paradoxes start with the original paradox that warfare was the oldest and best developed social science, but success in war was based on being the best at backing up deceits with destruction.

The history of militarism was the evolution of the War Kings, which were the source of the sovereign powers of states. Those powers have been about 99% privatized through the processes whereby the Fraud Kings were able to covertly take control over governments. The current King of Kings of Fraud is the Bank of International Settlements, and around every Fraud King central bank grew up a kind of court of the new royalty, with the corporations becoming the new courtiers, in a kind of science fiction nightmare devolution towards a sort of Feudalism, which has been amplified by technologies which are trillions of times greater than any in previous human history.

The main episodes in the developments of these things have been the Bank of England a few Centuries ago, and the Federal Reserve Board, a Century ago. To understand what has been going on requires perceiving that we have ALWAYS been at war, while the vast majority of people who did not understand that have ALWAYS been losing.

The central core, lynch pin and keystone to this has been the funding of the political processes, which provided the maximum leverage. Basically, the methods of organized crime were applied to become governments, and to take control over governments. The biggest gangsters were the banksters, and they were able to systematically bribe, or intimidate, politicians in order to turn them into puppets, while also paying to assassinate politicians which could not be bribed or assassinated. After Centuries of the application of the methods of organized crime used to covertly take control over the sovereign powers of governments, at least 99% of what governments do is based on legalized lies, backed up with legalized violence.

At some point, we need to go THROUGH the looking glass of our Bizarro Mirror World. We should change our political paradigms. We should understand that sovereignty was based on the power to rob, and the banksters have effectively been able to privatize the power to rob. Money is backed by murder, and it must necessarily be, because, the monetary system is backed up by the murder system, which the monetary system pays for in return. Actually, we live inside of a combined money/murder system. The debt controls depend upon the death controls. Taxation and legal tender laws are enforced to make fiat “money,” made out of nothing, become the currency that everyone is enslaved to have to use.

Furthermore, the death controls are the central characteristics of human ecology, while political economy always operates within the context of that human ecology. The history of militarism, or the history of the murder system, was always the foundation of the history of the money system. Human realities are ALWAYS organized systems of lies, operating organized robberies.

Impossible ideals actually make the opposite happen in the real world. To posit that there is every some “peace” different from periods of “war” is a false fundamental dichotomy. There are continuous flows of power and information, which are continuous manifestations of the money/murder systems. To penetrate into the deeper philosophical levels of that, we should appreciate the degree to which the biggest bullies’ bullshit stories deliberately taught people to think in ways where where BACKWARDS!

The ways that we understand everything these days are through the concepts of energy systems. BUT, the way that we think about entropy is BACKWARDS. An arbitrary minus sign was inserted into the entropy equations, so that power would end up having positive values. That profound philosophical error was then continued when thermodynamics became information theory. Like I said, human realities are ALWAYS organized lies, operating organized robberies. Since too few people understand that, we have a runaway situation, rather than better dynamic equilibria.

The notion of “no debt without consultation” is a good one. However, the REAL human system ACTUALLY works through a well-established social pyramid system, in which people have basically these range of roles: There are the people who relatively behave like Vicious Wolves, and people who behave like Zombie Sheeple. In between are a range of Domesticated Dog, and Black Sheep.

The relative proportions of those kinds of people are something like less than 1% who function as the “top carnivores” while 99% are their “prey.” There are a few percent of more Domesticated Dogs that surround the Vicious Wolves, and a few percent amongst the Zombie Sheeple, who are Black Sheep that somewhat understand and disagree with the established social pyramid system.

However, by and large, the DEBT WITHOUT CONSULTATION is already more than 99% established through the legalized counterfeiting of the public money supply by private banks. That REALITY means that 99% plus ARE acting like Zombie Sheeple, while the few Black Sheep that understand that still can do nothing practical, since their numbers are still tpo insignificant. Furthermore, those Black Sheep tend to be reactionary revolutionaries, whose analysis tends to be good, but then their “solutions” always collapse back to the same old bullshit impossible ideals, based on false fundamental dichotomies.

What I recommend is that citizens should understand that they are members of an organized crime gang, called their country. They should understand that the power to rob that they are supposed to collectively exercise through their country, via its constitution, and rule of law, has ALREADY been more than 99% usurped by the usurers. The PROBLEM is that 99% of the public does NOT demand that there be “no debts without consultation.”

Rather, they have already been robbed blind. Indeed, they are born into a system where the moment they get a birth certificate they are already suffering from almost total a priori robbery of almost everything. The powers of “We the People” have ALREADY been more than 99% privatized, while almost none of them understand that, and, what is more important, almost none of them want to understand that MONEY IS BACKED BY MURDER.

Instead, the banksters, by being the best organized gangs of criminals, have already succeeded in taking almost complete control over the current civilization, so that the collective powers of “We the People” are used to justify using legalized violence to back up legalized lies. Instead of checks and balances, we are now in a runaway fascist plutocracy juggernaut, where the top 1%, or so, are so far, far ahead in winning the social wars that the remaining 99%, or so, are reduced to being not much more than consumers of bullshit, rather than competent citizens.

Therefore, while I agreed with this article above, my view is that it is not so much as that “we are at war” as it is that “We the People” have ALREADY lost. The American Democratic Republic is already almost dead. All of the so-called “democracies” in the Anglo-American world are almost dead. It is now way too easy to fool enough of the people enough of the time. There is only controlled opposition from the Black Sheep, who tend to tell the Zombie Sheeple that everyone needs to be better Sheep.

I would suggest that we all need to learn to become better Wolves. However, that view is the fringe of the fringe of fringe. The deeper radical truths are nothing more than a Fringe Cubed recommendation, given the ACTUAL situation where 99% are effectively ALREADY Zombie Sheeple, who are already too brainwashed to believe in bullshit to be able to effectively understand and demand that “We the People” should control our own money system, rather than have given away the power to make “money” out of nothing to private banks. The established money-as-debt systems AUTOMATICALLY drive everyone into a vicious spiral of MORE “debt without consultation!”

To fully understand WHY that system developed requires seeing that money is backed by murder, and MUST BE. Therefore, the only way to democratize the debt controls would be to democratize the death controls. Since the vast majority of the Zombie Sheeple do not understand that, and do not want to understand that, one can most reasonably expect that the 1% who benefit from the ways that the powers of government were privatized WILL CONTINUE to be able to do so, more and more …

The only apparent “correction” is the final failure from too much “success” at controlling the WHOLE civilization through triumphant Huge Lies. The whole world is being dominated by the best professional liars, and immaculate hypocrites. Inside that context, it is practically impossible, from any realistic political point of view, to stop the runaway fascist plutocracy juggernaut from turning most of the people into its road kill.

The problem is that the Radical Truth which is necessary is something which is about as unpopular as it could possibly be. ALL the established religions and ideologies are part of the systems of social robbery, including those which function as the controlled opposition. Actually, militarism is the supreme ideology. Actually, society is controlled by the people who are the best at being dishonest, and backing that up with violence. Actually, there are no genuine solutions other than to continue to muddle through that madness.

    1. A few Aphorisms to compliment the sheeple generalisations. I do not have a problem with the Analysis only with the zeitgiest Rhetoric.

Are institutionalised education and knowledge mutually exclusive?
“There is no such thing as a neutral education process. Education either functions as an instrument which is used to facilitate the integration of generations into the logic of the present system and bring about conformity to it, or it becomes the ‘practice of freedom’, the means by which men and women deal critically with reality and discover how to participate in the transformation of their world.”

      1. I’m not sure whether this helps to understand how money is backed by murder but maybe these Noam Chomsky quotes illustrate something of how the accumulation of vast wealth in the hands of a very small select few, creates an environment in which death, despair & all the other social ills become the lot of the vast majority. Cause & effect unlike pulling a trigger takes place across a large complicated divide between the victims & those with manicures :

        http://www.thirdworldtraveler.com/Chomsky/Common_Good_Chomsky.html

      2. In the modern world, the ways that money is backed by murder are that people are forced to pay taxes in legal tender. That legal tender is legislated to be the fiat money created out of nothing, as debts. The power of the state to enforce taxation through the legal tender that the state deems must be paid is what has turned what used to be paper, but now is almost totally coded electricity, into “money.”

Money used to mean metal coins. However, the possession of gold or silver still rests upon some system of public violence, in order to enforce any claims to private property. Therefore, even if money went back to be based on any defined commodities, the possession of that commodity would still depend upon some force to assert that claim against others.

There is truly a history of this that goes back through the evolution of animals as far as one wants to consider that. Human beings live as robbers in their environment. They kill other plants and animals for food. They can also kill each other. Of course, they can also reach better dynamic equilibria, wherein they are able to cooperate, but those greater units of cooperation then tend to be in competition with other greater units.

The human history was of the power to rob. Since humans are basically entropic pumps, through which energy flows in the shape of toroidal vortices, these things are all by DEFINITION. The source of any discussion is SUBTRACTION of parts from the Whole, after which, the defined boundaries of any being require it to obtain new sources of energy across those boundaries, in order to continue living, as an entropic pump.

Therefore, it is possible to transcend any of the defined limits, whereafter there is no more robbery, because there are no more boundaries across which energy is taken. However. as soon as we do what human beings do, which is name things, and assign properties to them, then we automatically get the complete package deal of SUBTRACTION and ROBBERY.

Thus, all of this goes back in evolution as far as one can imagine. However, as the ability of human beings develops to tell stories, then the nature of those stories is that any ability to communicate in symbols also necessarily includes the potential to use those symbols to lie. Indeed, the original subtraction of any part from the Whole is the original lie, or relative illusion, upon which all the rest of the story depends. Thus, there is presumed to be a relative beginning, middle, and end to the story.

The story of “money” goes back as far back as hunting and gathering, and “sharing” those food stuffs amongst the group. What we are concerned with regarding the more modern concepts and definitions of money is primarily the history of Neolithic Civilization. That Civilization is the story of the evolution of organized systems of lies, operating organized robberies. The tests for survival were the constant warfare between different groups, selecting for the history of the War Kings. The powers asserted by the currently sovereign states are due to the long history of warfare forging those social organizations to have the forms that they do now.

I REPEAT the most important point: What makes “money” be “money” is primarily that one has to pay one’s taxes with that. Thus, it is the sovereign power of the state that backs up the symbolic values of the money. Sovereignty is based on the power to rob, and the ultimate power to rob is the power to kill. Governments enforce taxation, and can kill those who oppose being taxed. Therefore, the taxation that governments impose transform pieces of paper, or coded bursts of electricity, into being “money.”

Therefore, MONEY IS BACKED BY MURDER. Furthermore, the reasons why the international banksters were able to covertly take control of governments were that they were the biggest gangsters, who were the best at being dishonest and backing that up with violence.

There are deeper and deeper possible.levels to understanding any of these ideas. The superficial levels involve understanding how the banksters covertly controlled governments, in order to legalize the banksters being able to legally counterfeit the public money supply. However, the deeper levels are about how human civilization functions as an energy system.

As I suggested in my comment above, in order to understand energy systems better, one has to understand that the current ways we understand the concept of entropy has been inverted and perverted. That reflects the ways that the idea of “money” has been inverted and perverted, as “money” which was once gold and silver coins, with intrinsic values, related to the conservation of matter, were gradually replaced by paper and electricity, which has practically no intrinsic value outside of the overall system of the state enforcing laws.

The ways that we understand everything today are mostly based upon how we understand energy systems. However, the ways that we do that are currently almost totally BACKWARDS, due to the historical facts that the ways that we understand entropy were reversed.

Money as measurement brings up all of the issues regarding measurements found throughout all the rest of the sciences. The BIG PROBLEM we have is that there have been a series of paradigm shift breakthroughs in sciences like physics and biology, which have enabled technologies to become trillions of times more powerful and capable than anything before in known human history. At the same time, all political issues are dominated by the same old ideas, which are primarily the biggest bullies’ bullshit social stories, which tend to be systematically backwards.

As soon as we define any living thing as separate from its environment, then, by that definition, that living thing can die, and then there are death control forces which impinge on that living thing. The death controls are the central core of human ecology.

Our human ecology was shaped by the history of warfare, rationalized by militarism, to become what it is now. Therefore, we went through the history of the War Kings having their powers taken over by the Fraud Kings. The Fraud Kings are the private banks that get to make the public “money” supply out of nothing, as debts, while the governments force everyone else to accept that fraud.

That is the central way in which “money is backed by murder” at the present time. However, as I attempted to indicate above, there are infinite tunnels of deceits to consider in this context, and the lies are different at every level.

ALSO, as “steviefinn” suggested in his comment, since the allocation of resources is controlled by the money, those who control the money supply control things like food. Furthermore, things like creating more money out of nothing, as debts, can drive the price of food up steeply, as speculative spikes, which relatively suddenly means that poor people can no longer afford to buy food. Of course, there are many more hyper-complicated ways in which the debt controls are backed by the death controls, and there is a sliding scale of the degree and manner in which money is backed by murder.

The most significant symbolic ways were when politicians that could not be bribed or intimidated were assassinated. However, that was merely the most extreme fashion in which the application of the methods of organized crime were able to take control over the governments, so that the powers of governments were almost totally privatized, in the ways that the power to make “money” out of nothing was given to private banks.

Since money controls natural resources, which people need to live, control over the power to make “money” out of nothing is the supreme power, which dominates everything else. That control over the money system is the primary symbolic way in which the WARS continue.

As this article above identified the truth of our current situation, the runaway triumph of the banksters being able to take control over the money supply has spread out to enable them to take control over almost all social institutions, especially including the mass media:

“Repression is so last century. Anyone who disagrees is a conspiracy theorist.”

What I am saying is that the whole of human history has been one grand conspiracy of dishonesty, backed by violence. Our financial accounting system is fundamentally fraudulent, because MONEY IS BACKED BY MURDER, … but, those doing that operate through the maximum possible deceits that deny they are doing that, AND almost everyone else has been conditioned to go along with those Huge Lies, because they have been backed up with violence for so many generations. …

We are stuck inside of the human predicament, which is based on our abilities to tell stories about everything, including ourselves, and one could say that simultaneously that “In the beginning was the Word,” also, “In the beginning was the Lie.”

        ______

Anyway, there is tons more this kind of stuff on my Web site, especially in the English language Forum discussion thread entitled “Some Monetary System articles” …

  12. The biggest lies of all are rarely spoken or if they are the wrong lie is spoken. The current “wrong lie” is austerity by cutting public spending. There are no cuts possible that will make the slightest difference. You could decide only to spend what comes in via taxation but you would have to abolish the NHS, free education, welfare and pensions. If you think in third world standards that’s what you get and become. I am not clever because I know this, I think everybody knows it. Austerity is a lie.

The wrong lie of bank austerity is never even mentioned, far less the new laws needed to curb their economic rent seeking. That companies financed by debt can write this off against tax is outright theft from the exchequer. Banks are subsidised by billions from QE to ZIRP, from tax fraud and laundering. they even have a new BoE Governer from the squid to make sure their interests are not challenged.

Yes we are at war with our politicians but it is a proxy war, our real enemies are junk economics and high finance.

  13. Yes indeed this is a war. And one that is becoming more brutal and cruel by the week. Lack of opposition to the lies, deceit and dispossession by our neo-liberal plutocracy has only emboldened them to become more brutal. Bullying and punishing the poorest and most vulnerable serves both to divert attention on to convenient and powerless scapegoats, but also to intimidate the rest into acceptance of insecure, low-wage jobs.

How else to interpret George Osborne’s Comprehensive Spending Review?
“It will starve their children, push their mothers and fathers to foodbanks and charity, force proud men and women to beg.”
    http://diaryofabenefitscrounger.blogspot.co.uk/2013/06/the-cruelty-in-osbornes-csr.html

Austerity is a tactic. The strategy is the long term dismemberment and privatisation of the welfare state created after the second world war by the social democratic settlement. As Richard Murphy has pointed out, when talking to themselves (rather than to us, the ‘little people’) they are quite open about this.
“What J P Morgan is making clear is that ‘socialist’ inclinations must be removed from political structures; localism must be replaced with strong, central, authority; labour rights must be removed, consensus (call it democracy if you will) must cease to be of concern and the right to protest must be curtailed. This is an agenda for hard right, corporatist, centrist government. There’s another word for that, and it’s what the bankers seem to want”.
    http://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2013/06/25/jp-morgan-wants-europe-to-be-rid-of-social-rights-democracy-employee-rights-and-the-right-to-protest/#sthash.MLzQ8g7O.fJ24vT7u.dpuf

  14. What is underlined by David is the fact that we live in a world that talks Democracy and yet it is now a complete fiction. At all levels from local politics to our corrupt coalition and the opposition there is no transparency or openness. We are controlled by the moneymen and the global corporations and the governments that dance to their tune. How can there any democracy when the State, banks and corporations hide behind secrecy and lies, tax evasion and avoidance? Yet, we the citizens or should I say ‘subjects’ (not to the crown but the governments that have taken the power to themselves) are denied justice, are spied upon, have our money commandeered to reward those who were responsible for destroying our economy, controlled and yes lied to by the state. Did any of us really vote for what has happened since 2008? No!
We are indeed at war and the fight is to save Democracy from these liars.

  15. An Irish mother (I won’t mention whose) loved to host the local pre-Internet commentators when a certain Irish country boy (I won’t mention his name) was growing up. Like yourself Kevin her job was to moderate the discussion and ensure that every issue got a fair hearing and made into a good story as she circled the large country kitchen with two pots of hot tea one in each of her big farmer-wife hands.

The penalty for stupid remarks was to be left with an empty mug while the reward for talking common sense, as adjudged by her, was an overflowing mug-o’tay at all times.

Once a stranger dropped by and got stuck into the lively discussion. After a while this poor unfortunate travelling man threw his hands up in despair and blurted “I have never met such a bunch of liars in all my life!” “Arrah shut up you daft eejit” snapped the woman-of-the-house, “isn’t it lies we’re tellin’”, brusquely withdrawing his mug entirely.

Isn’t it lies we’re all telling now Kevin? We’re not going to change what happened I’m afraid. It’s the story that counts at this stage. He who can craft the biggest lie for the naughties’ sorry-ass boom and bust story gets the biggest mug-o’tay.

Ah you make a grand mug-o’tay Kevin. I love to drop into your warm and friendly kitchen, where only the best lies are explored and commented upon. BTW, like you, the be-sainted Irish mother in question never told a lie in her entire life, but like you, she heard plenty.

    1. The lies are surely ancient and persistent. Julius Caesar invaded Britain in 53 BC, but in fact couldn’t get his lads into their boats. I was taught the rubbish 2000 years later. Of course I was taught and soaked-up much more destructive trash about Britain’s greatness and the way of the world. Bacon had terms for this kind of rot around 1600 (his Idols).
I can barely watch any news of current affairs programmes because nothing of any value is discussed and it is very rare that even the problem is revealed.

The situation s so bad that I’ve spent 20 years teaching finance in universities and still can’t produce an argument that really satisfies me on why it is so crap, even if I take the idea that accumulated money captures politics as read. My view is some stuff is necessarily complex like a fusion reactor, and finance is generally a complexity imitator (after all, one of the early accounting frauds was illegible handwriting). Huge numbers of people can’t do the basic sums of finance, but now it seems no one can really read accounts. I think I know what the basic con is, because every time I look at financial figures I can see one or more of:
      1. something missing
      2. assets I’d want to visit
      3. exclusion of what the case would be if the successful change had not taken place
      4. changes in definition (earnings pulled from future times in 24 hr P & L etc.)
      5. figures that should be stated in wide range used as specific

The list goes on and I realise I now know sod all about how to spot a good company from one about to go bust on paper analysis (except in my own prepared classroom examples). I go for a pint and my old mate Baz the Shill tells me how he is making his money these days. He’s stealing from the tax man. Counterfeit and smuggled booze and fags. Baz did my classes 15 years ago and smiles the words ‘transfer pricing’ at me. Back at university I order £20K of computing stuff from our approved supplier. I could get it down the road for £12K but central accounts will get the £8K as a discount bung at the end of the year. I overpriced the equipment in my research bid so my university essentially steals this £8K from the research funder. We are all at it. I’m pretty sure I see evidence in all kinds of financial reporting figures of fraud and very old frauds at that. The biggest lie is that finance produces profit at good margins.
What state would Ireland and the UK be in now without the financial “boom”? Our agriculture and manufacturing might, probably would have done more for GDP than finance – but if the ‘what if’ about what extra manufacturing and agriculture we might have has to be an estimate, the contribution of finance to GDP (or GNP) is as elastic as an estimate too. The range is from about +14% to a potential -35% – with the opportunity costs of not investing in agriculture and manufacturing added to the loss or subtracted from the gain. Quite why Ireland had to pay out we don’t know as bondholders should have been at risk (etc). Cyprus was even worse. Bond holders have been stiffed at the Coop but how even forewarned by the crash did conservative |Coop bankers not work out Britannia was bust (and God knows what the Lloyd’s pack of magic beans was)?
It’s not just secrets and lies – much of this is about gross incompetence, people not being able to say boo to a goose, slamming doors in the face of people asking questions (like do your job please) and mainstream media flunkies who can barely count.
In the meantime the UK might have caught up with Germany on the manufacturing front, have, say, a massive advantage in international higher education provision, anti-gravity bacon production and so on had we worked out finance is really for idle old farts in suits who steal tax and did Ponzi 101.

    2. Hi Pat

A great tale worth telling, good job she hadn’t been carrying pots of Guiness. I’m sure you have heard about the Anglo tapes which are cooking up a bit of a storm & judging by my Irish facebook friends who were for the most part almost resigned to the plight of the country, the vocal revelations are stirring up considerable anger & I think a certain amount of shame.

Compared to my English FB friends however the Irish ones are much more aware of the truth, obviously because they are at the sharp end in comparison to those in the UK, who it seems to me are still stuck in the pantomime of believing that there will be light ahead within the tunnel. Hopefully it will be realised that the Irish bankers are a representation of their international class who just happen to use a more colourful language. The work I am presently engaged in means I get to chat to people – I start by saying that times are tough & see where it goes. I have noticed an increasing awareness & anger towards bankers & politicians & more readiness to take on board the odd facts that I pass on.

The very nature of the financial & political shyster’s arrogance might help to change things, especially as the situation further deteriorates & more concrete examples of their behaviour comes to light. The above example & incidents like Bank of America trying to get some fella locked up for 15yrs for protesting by means of writing in chalk outside one of their dens, which could go viral, will only help. Let’s face it judging from the their arrogance & hubris, they simply cannot help themselves, & will eventually overstep the mark in a prelude to a fall.

Maybe I am kidding myself but in the UK there are signs that the MSM are presenting more content that shows something other than the dark side. This fella will be probably written off as no more than a comedian, Beppe Grillo style, but it’s good to hear his voice & the audience reaction on a UK programme called ‘ Question Time ‘ that as far as I know, attracts a large audience:

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0KPB_wzn_M&feature=player_detailpage

As to secrets & lies, here’s a reaction with added bullshit & hypocrisy from Dame Enda & our current ‘ Iron Lady ‘ to the good ol’ boys Anglogate tapes:

      http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2013/jun/28/angela-merkel-anglo-irish-bank-scandal

Maybe a slow enlightenment will turn out to be a good thing in the long run, perhaps it will give time for a truer realisation of the facts & then hopefully less chance of extremists taking advantage. We live in hope, although these rats when in a corner could well engineer a huge distraction in order to stop us looking too closely into their dark disgusting holes.

I hope there will be more cheer for you when you are back sipping your tay.

      Brilliant comments folks.

      1. Hi Stevie,

I am glad the Anglo tapes happened. It brings the lies into sharp focus. It is not just hyperbole any more. It really happened. Unfortunately there are still an awful lot of people in denial.

It is interesting that Drumm the CEO of Anglo, actually wanted to burn his own bondholders while the Irish politicians wanted to save them. That worries me.

The thing about Ireland is that the big political parties do not disclose where they get their funds. Fianna Fail and Fine Gael could be funded by the Mafia for all we know. Or worse, by bankers.

We must look at “cui bono”. It is hard to face the fact that Ireland’s two main political parties may actually be crime syndicates. But what else are we supposed to think?

  16. What about irredeemable debt? There is no corresponding credit in that. And giving love has no corresponding debt. You cannot buy love, you do not deserve it, you cannot earn it.

Even if that was not so, why does it follow that every secret must then have a lie. Are you saying giving away a secret is credit. Surely one is obliged to give it up or keep it for free?

There certainly is a lie permanently attached to this forum: That banks and government are responsible for your robbery.

I realise that’s sounds harsh. So can you show me its not true and I will concede? And if not will you stop blaming others and start to deal with the problems you are causing first? Quid pro quo. That’s fair isn’t it. Credit for debt.

    This might be useful:

Mortgages, Repossessions, Property Sales, Selling Price – Er, hellooooo!

And on the fallacy of rewards for love:
    http://www.meltfund.com/2013/05/expect-no-reward-or-repayment-and-go-far.html

We’re still waiting for a response on the other points of certainty.

    Yours,

    1. Robin,

I don’t think playing with semantics helps. If you ignore the fact that mortgages were marketed and that both regulators and political parties have been compromised then what you say is true. If you believe that something is true then it is by definition true to you. Politicians and bankers have many self manufactured truths I simply don’t recognise myself as true.

Therefore, by your own arguments, what you say is true isn’t because I don’t believe it. QED.

As foreign secretaries and American enforcers obediently mouth forth their extreme forms of damage control, to whitewash their deeply stained world view, it is all to no avail: Too many are now stunned and realise that these enforcers can only be believed if one is clueless, stupid or naive.
Waking up is a process. It is better late than never and this stunned paralysis is just a warm up before it turns to something new. Creativity thus arises.

Golem – great article! Thank you very much. We are indeed at war,and this is one we cannot afford to lose.

Adding to your excellent article is another by Automatic Earth today entitled, “Playing Russian Roulette With Someone Else’s Head”:

“The reality behind a parliamentary banking commission in today’s world is that there are no politicians capable of doing things, no matter how just and justified they may be, against the implicit and explicit demands of the financial elites in their countries. As far as the most important political positions are concerned, they are available only to those who align themselves with these elites. So it’s not just the financial world that should be subject to a total overhaul, the political world that should execute that overhaul needs one as well. And that’s not going to come from within.

In essence it’s as easy as pie: A financial world that cannot function without a constant influx of public funds is obviously dysfunctional. So start by putting a halt to the bank bail-outs. Break up the banks into smaller units, and separate commercial banks from investments banks. The question is not which are the proper measures. The question is who will execute them. It won’t be the – political – establishment, because in the present situation they (like the bankers) can all keep playing russian roulette with someone else’s head, and they like it that way.

Any changes would have to come from people who get sick and tired of having their heads played with.”

“Will the Real Traitors Please Stand Up?”:

“The gangster government in Washington that has everything to hide is now in NSA’s hands and will follow orders. The pretense that amerika is a democracy responsible to the people has been exposed. The US is run by and for the NSA. Congress and the White House are NSA puppets.

Let’s quit calling the NSA the National Security Agency. Clearly, NSA is a threat to the security of every person in the entire world. Let’s call the NSA what it really is–the National Stasi Agency, the largest collection of Gestapo in human history. You can take for granted that every media whore, every government prostitute, every ignorant flag-waver who declares Snowden to be a traitor is either brainwashed or blackmailed. They are the protectors of NSA tyranny. They are our enemies.”

  20. The one secret that could undo the whole web of secrets.

Few have ever stopped to think how, in ostensibly democratic open societies predicated on personal and economic freedoms, the choice of monetary system is imposed unilaterally and arbitrarily by government.

It is imposed and it is enforced by the threat of violence.

Once imposition and enforcement of this particular monetary system is established, control of people, their productivity and their wealth is established.

Everything else whether social, technological or, indeed, economic, is a ramification thereof.

Broken down into arithmetical equations, this particular variety of monetary system guarantees:

    a) The gradual but inexorable ascent of financial value as opposed to intrinsic value

    b) The above leads to the gradual transfer of the productive capital of society (i.e. intrinsic value) into the hands of the creator of the currency

    c) As wealth is gradually concentrated, society is happy to give government ever more pervasive and absolutist powers in an attempt at protecting their presumed interest. Thus, government becomes the largest actor in the economy

    c) As a result, the individual becomes progressively more dependent on government till it is fully so

The point at which the individual is fully dependent on government then, by extension, the individual also has a vested interest in the perpetuation of the system.

As Blair T. Longley rightly pointed out, we’ve always been at war. It is not new.

There was a period of time beginning around the Renaissance during which in the West society began to acquire, if not power, certainly more rights over the centralizing inclinations of the elite. I suspect however, that this advance was due to a power vacuum brought about by the state of flux at a time when control was shifting from the church to secular institutions.

This advance was however stopped in its tracks by the creation of the central bank.

As central banks go and due to Floating Exchange Rates (FER), today the Fed is the global central bank; at least for those countries that are members of the FER system.

The war that is about to be precipitated however, will be on par with the most destructive wars humanity has ever witnessed. We are only two to five years away for the next event.

  21. Sorry to butt in again. I think all readers here would do well to understand what is being said here.

If you can affirm it I think you will find a new kind of liberty that means you can stop making heretics of those who question modern day slavery. And those who are quick to blame others before resolving their own issues, or who look for reward for saving the planet.

    http://archive.org/stream/riseprogressphas00obriuoft#page/n7/mode/2up

    Started reading this… looks interesting.

    On dependency culture (p. 29)…

“The slaves, on their side, appear to have been perfectly reconciled to slavery as an institution. The writings of the ancients have left us nothing to countervail this opinion, but, on the contrary, much to confirm it. We can nowhere discover any evidence to show that the slaves of antiquity regarded slavery in any other light than as an institution natural in itself, and neither unjust nor unreasonable, provided they (the slaves) were well treated. It is true they often complained of their lot, and sometimes rebelled, too, in order to change it; but, in so doing, it is to be observed, they never complained of slavery as an institution, nor invoked the principle of Equality as the end and object of their complaints or rebellions. Their complaint was, not that slavery existed, but that they, themselves, and not others, were the slaves. And when they rebelled, it was not in order to put down slavery and establish liberty for all ; it was to exchange conditions with their masters, or else to secure their own freedom at the price of taking away other people’s. The idea of making common cause with other slaves, in order to emancipate all slaves, never entered their heads. Principle, or love of equality, had nothing whatever to do with their movements. The principle of liberty for all was too sublime an idea for them. Equality before God and the law was still further beyond them. Slavery, as a principle, they had no fault to find with; they complained only of the accident that made them slaves and others free. Even of this the vast majority never complained, because the vast majority (there is reason to believe) were content with their lot, and satisfied with their masters’ treatment of them. Indeed, the whole tenour of what we read of in history respecting slaves leads to this conclusion. The vast majority were content with their condition. In general they were kindly treated; and as they knew no other state, and saw nothing unjust or unreasonable in slavery, they were attached to their masters as to benefactors (regarding them as the authors of their comfort), and might, mayhap, as a general rule, be pronounced happy.”

“In the following chapter we shall endeavour to account for this, and show that, as a general rule, the slaves acted wisely, in preferring to remain slaves (when they knew so little of real liberty) to becoming “free and independent labourers,” without arms, votes, lands, money, -or credit, after British fashion.”

We live in a giant pyramid sale, all willing participants, but pretend there is a conspiracy of power overwhelming us that must be reformed. What a cowardly lie that is.

    1. For a moment there I thought I had stumbled on Squire Osbourn’s leaked justifications for a future plan to resurrect the British economy. It seems however the author was a 19th century Chartist who spent his whole life fighting for universal suffrage. In my book that made him a good man. However I think that the above tells only part of the story & is anyway an assumption. Perhaps the majority of the millions of slaves who have existed on this sorry planet were reasonably happy with their lot, but I would put that down to having no choice in the matter, which is perhaps in itself is a definition of slavery.

As for the revolts & the motivations for them, whether they were personal or altruistic, I suppose those subjected to slavery were susceptible to human vices as we all are. Also being subjected to a degrading lifestyle which was I presume the reason they revolted, would I imagine have meant that they probably were not too idealistic & in any case they would probably be further doomed to participate in a system that for the most part was the only one on offer.

I cannot imagine that those European men, women & children who were dragged off by Barbary pirates, the European& American sailors shipwrecked off the West coast of Africa who were enslaved by Arabs, the African who was not allowed to marry the woman he loved while she was regularly impregnated by their owner to increase his stock & the millions of others stuffed into foul confinement in coffin ships in which the majority of them would die before reaching the land of the free, & the countless sex slaves both children & adult were particularly happy with their lot.

You add a very modern title to the text: ‘ Dependency Culture ‘, but surely the dependency was that economies & wealth needed a system of slavery to prop them up. As in the US civil war which was fought to protect the interests of a system that relied on slavery to prosper.

It seems to me that when these unfortunates were given a choice they chose & fought for their freedom & isn’t this the essence of freedom to have a choice ? the World is full of people with little choice & indeed many are still slaves, but to equate the suffering of the above to people like myself is ridiculous, I have a choice even if that choice is constrained by the system in which I live. By your reasoning we will always be slaves.

      1. @SteveFinn

We are, indeed and whether we like it or not, if not slaves at least dependent.

When an entity successfully imposes a currency and maintains exclusive control of the value of it, then this entity has full control over individuals.

In the above context, by a deliberate and aggressive policy of currency devaluation, even those individuals that are not taken-in directly by the system – i.e. those individuals that do not make use of borrowed funds – must necessarily succumb and become dependent simply because the monetary authority drives the cost of living to levels that most individuals cannot hope to afford.

To varying degrees therefore, all today are vested in the status quo and most would rather not rock the boat regardless any qualms they may have towards government policy or towards the policies of their employer.

        1. Hi Pat

I have just finished the 2nd series of HBO’s ‘ Boardwalk Empire ‘, as far as I can tell it’s based on historical fact, with fiction filling in that framework. It charts the effect Prohibition had on the US, in particular the north east, Atlantic city, New York, Chicago etc, Irish – American politics feature strongly. There are some glaring inaccuracies, one being that I am pretty sure the IRA didn’t use Tommy guns. What I find interesting is the fact that those who were historically always labelled as the bad guys were in fact small fry to the politicians & those they fed off who always carried the real power.

I suppose that’s why the likes of Capone & Luciano were eventually brought to some kind of justice, whereas the big boys were for the most part not. I think it’s also a good illustration of how corruption works in as much as how once a line is crossed it is very hard to step back, usually leading to ever more steps forward until you become unrecognisable to the person you were when taking that initial step.

I had some experience of local Irish politicians & those from the 2 main parties, especially from FF & basically they were running rackets based on property & development. I remember seeing Charlie Haughey’s house stuck on one of the Blasket Islands & thinking that it kind of summed things up. Like in the above series they all are connected to developers, bankers & corporations, which is obvious from what the likes of Ahern & Bruton are now up to.

The answer I think, is in the company they keep.

          1. You sum it up well – the FF politicians were “running rackets based on property & development”. The trouble is that it seems to be irreversible. FG is no better. You need a lot of money to run a large organization like a political party and political money is mostly dirty.

          2. Not exactly a precise historical reference Stevie but the song the Merry Ploughboy have these lines…
“For im tired of this civilian life,
Since the day that i was born,
So im off to join the IRA,
            And im off tomorrow morn’.

And were all off to Dublin in the green,
Where the helmets glisten in the sun,
            Where the bay’nets clash,
            and rifles crash,
to the echo of the thompson gun.”

          3. Wirlpit

            I stand corrected. Glad the show is right, although it seems they were much more effective in Chicago than Cork. :}

        2. Guido.
Agreed – I am dependent on a lot of things but have never sold myself & am no longer a debt slave. Incidentally there are a minimum of 12 million debt slaves in South Asia:

          From Wiki:

‘Debt bondage has been defined by the United Nations as a form of “modern day slavery”[13] and is prohibited by international law. It is specifically dealt with by article 1(a) of the United Nations 1956 Supplementary Convention on the Abolition of Slavery. It persists nonetheless especially in developing nations, which have few mechanisms for credit security or bankruptcy, and where fewer people hold formal title to land or possessions. According to some economists, for example Hernando de Soto, this is a major barrier to development in those countries – entrepreneurs do not dare take risks and cannot get credit because they hold no collateral and may burden families for generations to come ‘

Is that so different to where we are, or where we are heading ? I know people who lead lousy lives trying to pay a mortgage. However there is a long way to go I hope, before we get to hardcore enslavement on a large scale.

          1. A bit of a non sequitur here, but not really.

I spent twelve years in Executive Search & Selection for the hotel industry based out of London. We did a lot of work in the Persian Gulf.

When I left the industry around 2002, the most fertile ground for the recruitment of rank and file staff was Moldova.

It worked like this. A Moldovan seeking work overseas signs up with a local ‘recruiter’ in Moldova. Cost was anywhere from $1000 to $3000 just to be on the list. More money would be paid to recruiters if hired. These sums would generally be borrowed often from the recruiting offices.

The list was fanned out to recruitment agencies globally especially in dodgy countries like Dubai.

Dubai recruitment agencies would present the list to potential clients. We are talking here of the major global hotel chains.

Dubai 5 star chain hotels would pick names and then would fly a team to Moldova for final interview.

If hired, recruited staff, particularly women, would be flown to Dubai and their passport confiscated. Salary: US$100 per month.

When questioned about the morality of the entire thing, otherwise reasonable Western General Managers would claim that US$100 was a significant sum in Moldova. As far as the confiscation of the passport goes, the claim is that if the hotel does not do that, then “these women” (sic) would try to get married to wealthy local men.

The UN and Wikipedia can claim that slavery only happens in dark dodgy places and is perpetrated by unscrupulous barbarians. The truth of course is that slavery is perpetrated in broad daylight by the best known global corporations under the guise of “employment”.

          2. “I know people who lead lousy lives trying to pay a mortgage. However there is a long way to go I hope, before we get to hardcore enslavement on a large scale.”

I have the curse of knowing a large number of UN employees. Most of them lovely people, some of them high ranking and very knowledgeable, a few well cultured.

Of all the UN employees I know, none have any respect for the organization. Yet, I know of only one person in my circle of friends and acquaintances that has ever willingly resigned purely on moral grounds.

To me, the UN is the quintessential example of dependency/slavery. The perks and the pay is so good that most employees would never willingly forfait their job regardless of whether they think the UN holds the moral ground or not. They just toe the line and carry on.

The same goes for government employees and/or politicians. Was it not Jean Claude Juncker that confessed to knowing exactly what needs to be done but not knowing what to do to be re-elected if what
            needs doing is actually done?

            http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Jean-Claude_Juncker

      2. It would be interesting to try to examine the nature of slavery (but I am not sure that we have any written accounts from slaves) in antiquity, prior to the revolution in hearts/minds introduced by the Judeo-Christian manner of looking at the world. (You will remember that Jewish identity rests on having been led out of slavery by Moses. Thus, the slavery question is central to Jewish identity, as a religious, and not ideological identity.)
The idea of having a choice is a deceptive one…and a question of degree.
At this point in time, modern man does not have a great deal of choice about putting meat and potatoes on the table (in his own eyes..) : he is EXPECTED TO WORK for monetary compensation in order to do so.
And he is expected to gain access to his subsistance through monetary transactions (not hunting and gathering…). Hint : if you are expected to do something, you do have SOME CHOICE about doing what you are expected to do or not. So.. your freedom is in your choice.
I could say that modern man is so.. ENSLAVED to the money/work/meat and potatoes game that in many cases he is incapable of picking fruit on non private property trees in his neighborhood (hunting and gathering), in order to escape the supermarket game, or at least, diminish his.. dependancy on the supermarket. Many people in France (the middle class and above…) do not even SEE the fruit on the trees in our… public parks. Nor do they bother picking the fruit on their own private property trees. No, they prefer to take their cars to drive to the supermarket to buy their fruit.
Talk about.. enslavement. Until we realize how voluntary servitude works, until we wake up on this question, we will keep on griping/whining how we don’t have any choice.
To me, there is no such thing as absolute freedom, and we do not want to know this. Drunk on freedom, we want more, and more, not realizing that the freedom game displaces dependancy which appears elsewhere.
(Griping about alienation to the State is incredibly naïve when you consider that the infrastructure that you drive your INDIVIDUAL car on depends on the State. No infrastructure.. no car. THAT is what I call.. dependancy on a very large scale. Much more so than what our ancestors knew.)
Those who do not.. work in order to put meat and potatoes on the table are sneered at, or pitied, at the two extremes of this spectrum.
Those of us who do not work in order to put meat and potatoes on the table are.. PRICELESS in our current system, as reminders that dependancy is not always where we think it is, and as reminders that dependancy can take many forms, none of them.. equal ? equivalent ? And that dependancy is the human lot. Period.
Our money is getting a heavy beating at this time, as though WE could consciously, and omnipotently CONTROL it..
I do not believe this at all.
Indeed, our money (monetary systems) control us far more than we like to think.
But not just in our financial transactions. Not just in the social/political sphere.
IN OUR INDIVIDUAL MINDS. In our language…

        1. Hi Debra,

Many minds , Many perspectives in an interconnected world.

It was six men of Indostan
          To learning much inclined,
Who went to see the Elephant
(Though all of them were blind),
          That each by observation
          Might satisfy his mind.

Potolmic epicycles of justification are everywhere and always have been, some one once alluded to the first time a humanoid painted on the wall of a cave, my favourite cave reference has to be Platos though.

I have not heard you refer recently to binary thought, I do like the censure against such simple black and white thinking it is what allows those who would wish too, to divide and rule.

This Physics paper may well be a very important start in the direction of recovering from the idea that Papa knows best.

    2. Robin,

Have you heard about this strange idea called “advancement of civilisation”? It’s a curious notion I know but it involves reducing exploitation, compassion, empathy and the genuine things that make people happy.

I’m afraid your ludicrous witterings prove nothing.

    3. Of the seeming happiness of slaves… I remember from a social history of Britain a poster from the 1820’s I think, of an image of a black slave family looking happy with the title SLAVERY and one with a miserable and impoverished British family entitled FREEDOM.

  22. “This report outlines 35 cases where Ministerial claims using statistics on the subject of Work and Benefits have fallen short of the standards expected of Government Ministers.

We believe that this demonstrates a consistent pattern of abuse of official statistics by Ministers of the present Government to paint a false picture of benefit claimants in the UK in support of policies which are aimed at cost cutting to the detriment of jobless, sick and disabled people.

Within this document, each case is presented, and fully referenced to source material throughout.”

  23. …for me feeling free is just about the most treasured feeling every day. i get to say what i do. I can’t imagine how life is without the feeling called freedom.

    1. I can say “I know how they feel”.

Knowing my fate in advance but working my time out and watching all of my senior management colleagues take salaried redundancy to the tune of tens of thousands of pounds.

When it came to my turn I got statutory redundancy and less than 1 months pay for 10 years service.

  24. Today I just finished reading “The Bacchae”, by Euripides.
Euripides goes back even further than William, who, incidentally, everybody here must know that I love to the point of almost being able to recite “Macbeth”… (lots to say about Macbeth’s ambition, that ties into “The Bacchae”, too, but.. I will spare you that.)
It never ceases to amaze me how much the ancient Greek plays remain pertinent to things like currency devaluation, power, the role of the State, etc.
What is particularly chilling about “The Bacchae” is this :
There is a new.. god in town. He’s called Dionysos. He is associated with that strong drink that makes men and women.. disorderly, and seriously disturbs.. the State, and business as usual, you know, the time immemorial buying and selling, mortgages, currency devaluation.
Dionysos is family kin to the Theban royal family who, as the saying goes, refuses to recognize the prophet in his own country.
And since Dionysos is a god, and a powerful one, he is peeved that men are behaving arrogantly, and refusing to give him his due.
When Pentheus, the current King, makes his first appearance in the play, he says some things that should make us prick up our ears very quickly.
He mentions that Dionysos is.. a fraud. That he intends to corrupt, and profit from the country’s women by making them drunken and unchaste.
Dionysos, according to him, is one big lie, undeserving of attention, or belief.
And Pentheus descends into paranoiac madness in the course of the play.
EVERYONE… descends into paranoiac madness, the greater part of the city of Thebes, because…of hubris.
Not giving belief/credit where credit is due.
Not giving honor to the gods. Not maintaining that essential difference between human and divine that maintains man firmly in his.. place, which is not an omnipotent one.
The play ends in a tragic bloodbath.
If you bother to read it, it could get you very uneasy, looking at all the parallels in our world.
Because… we are not giving honor to the gods at all…
    Oops.
What we can not, and will not see concerning WW2 is what happens when your society goes mad…
Because it can, and does happen.
    The Ancients knew this.
    We knew this… during WW2, at least…
Do we know it now ?
    I’m not so sure…

    1. I read Roberts.
His definition of hubris and mine/Euripides’ are not the same at all.
His definition… still keeps man in the driver’s seat in this world.
The place where man… IS NOT, and never will be.
While we may have different perceptions about what hubris means right now, the definition that I am using is one that we have blithely axed…
And the one that will come back to haunt ? devour ? us…

  25. Though I still rate this blog I think it’s getting bogged down in complexity especially in the comments section. The single biggest lie is staring us all in the face every single day and it’s really simple. It’s that the ethereal, the make believe, the plucked from thin air takes precedence…….to the point at which they have people believing that we are running out of something that doesn’t actually exist. We have time, we have labour, we have materials and we have skills and the ability to pass on those skills.

But we have to suffer due to a lack of money…the bit that we invent…they even have us believing that using more of the invented stuff in the here and now will deprive our children and future generations.

    1. With all due respect…
I think that you are not giving credit to the power of fiction in our world.
Maybe we made money up, but, whether or not we made it up, we definitely.. believe in it, and lots of things get done with it, whether you like it or not.
Sometimes things that are made up, they have enormous power.
Maybe even more power than things that we BELIEVE are NOT made up ?
A long time ago, somebody very important said “What is truth ?”.
And that other somebody, who was also very important.. had no reply.
We really need to go beyond quibbling over the status of fiction.
It has power. Great power. Whether we want to believe (in) it or not…
Particularly in the world of men, in their society.
And most, if not all, of us live there…
There is a saying that “the buck stops here”.
The buck has to stop somewhere…
Every seven years or so, debt was.. forgiven in Biblical times, in Jewish society. (Maybe somebody else here knows more than I do about this ?)
A way of wiping the slate clean.
The slate needs to get wiped clean from time to time…

  26. MacB. I must admit to relishing the comments ariaing from these very informative blogs. I often find that the various strands of Musing will validateor inspire further thoughts in my own mind. Surely this is the way we educate and learn from each other and arrive at a consensus?

    1. I don’t disagree Chris I just worry that there is a tendency to complexity and intellectual oneupmanship that fails in the key areas of education and spreading the word. I find a lot of the posts very interesting but I know many people for whom reading this would make their eyes glaze over. Think of the one liners so capably employed via the MSM, a classic would be:-

Socialists always run out of other peoples money

Lengthy debate no matter how well intentioned doesn’t grab the attention like that nor does it remain in the collective consciousness in the same way. Whereas something like:-

Austerity – because we’re running out of the imaginary money we made up

Yeah I know I’m no wordsmith and someone could do something snappier but you get the gist. Or there was that guy in the US that stood for election on the ‘Rent is too Damned High’ platform. Think of the recent spending review in the UK and think of the numbers that are never included. It would be very useful to see our annual spend broken out so that rents, debt interest and services spending were clear.

On a personal level I tend to the Steve Keen viewpoint which is really just a variation on the debt slavery and freeing people from it angle.

      1. Hello MacB,

I think you’re right about the need for pithy and catchy one-liners and the need to guard against becoming too pleased with being oh-so-clever just for the sake of it.

But what I would say is this – I don’t think those on-liners give people a new idea or plant a seed, I think they crystalize a thought they almost had anyway. A good one liner a couple of years too early falls flat. But if it arives at just the right moment – when the ideas are ‘in the air’ – it crystalizes the thought.

I think therefore there is a prior and vital job, which often goes unnoticed, and that is chipping away at all the old certainties, starting people considering other ideas – creating the conditions, planting the ideas (to horribly mix many metaphors – sorry) for that one-liner to crystalize.

I don’t think we lack better ideas or clear ideas – Debt slavery is one such) I think we have not eroded the old ideas that are what prevent people from accepting the new as even being possible. That is the job I hope and believe we are doing here.

      2. MacB

I understand exactly what you’re saying. A number of previous commenters who I would always look for here have all but disappeared. Most who now comment are completely lost up some pseudo intellectual personal orifice. bill40 (not one I’m referring to) responded to one above, but there are others vying for those heights.

Meanwhile, the neo liberal vandals continue unabated…..and I’m certain entirely untroubled (probably laughing heartily) at the verbose treatises that pass for many comments here now.

  27. I’m still trying to figure out why MPs need a £200 a week pay rise when IDS made it clear that £58 a week was quite enough to live off.

  28. On One Liners and receptive learners Claes Jonson has some interesting views on the Body And Soul of mathmatics education. Heres his piece on Economic instability in Capitalism. First A brief Quote from the Good Professor.

    ”The Danger of Derivatives

In a capitalistic market system its possible to make business from differences in resources, technology, knowledge or demand, with small business thriving from small differences and big business on big differences. You can run a small consulting business of you know a little more than most people. If you happen to have a big oil well on your property, then you can start a big business.

The financial markets of derivates thrives on differences in the form of the fluctuations or rates of change or derivatives with respect to time of e.g. stocks on the stock market in
    the form of options.

A successful day trader can run a small business buying and selling
small amounts of stocks on a daily basis, but upscaling is risky:

small business thriving on small differences can be (fairly) stable

big business thriving on small differences is very unstable (cf. Instability of Capitalism).

    http://claesjohnsonmathscience.wordpress.com/article/mathematics-of-the-economical-crisis-yvfu3xg7d7wt-64/

In Claes’s E Book.Dr Faustus of Modern Physics Our Hosts documentary gets a Mention ( if a little pithy) apparently you are propagating the theory of deep religious mysticism of ´´god as mathematician mathematician as god and infinity´´roughly p.163 if you want to take a look at what exactly he says. Apart from that bit I thoroughly enjoyed the book.

    http://books.google.com/books?id=5kcdpa3Qhj8C&lpg=PP1&pg=PP1#v=onepage&q&f=false

Claes also reminds us of the dictum of Voltaire, ´´It is dangerous to be right in matters on which the established authorities are wrong´´.

    1. Very interesting, Roger.
A few years ago, I got excited realizing that somewhere way back ? recently ? we had lost track of what exponential growth meant, and what exponential was.
Exponential growth is one of the major characteristics of Mother Nature…
Like the idea that each individual cherry on that tree has the (theoretical) capacity of producing another tree…
In order to see exponential growth, you need a feeling of connection to the world of nature.
You CAN see it in the city, but your eyes have to be sharp, very sharp..otherwise it will pass you by.
Why am I not surprised that we have not been seeing this ?
And why am I not surprised that we do not realize that even with the majority of the world’s population living light years away from where their food is produced, Mother Nature’s Laws still hold… in the cities, with their supermarkets ?

  29. Mr. Howard could just as easily have said “no comment.” If he lets it be known that he has a policy of always saying “no comment” when asked such a question, regardless of his intentions, then:

    1. It isn’t a lie, and

    2. There is no way for the hearers to logically divine a “yes” from it, because he would also say “no comment” even if he was not going to devalue.

So, his use of that hypothetical argument is either a lie or incompetence, and, since he’s a politician, it is probably both.

  30. Great Article David.
Its set off a whole lot of thoughts…The idea that a Lie has a sell by date. Or rather a peddle by date. As long as it is believed for a time…or with Lies of Omission not questioned further for sufficient time…

…then actions can be taken, hidden moves made, plausible stories created, witnessess silenced… or simply that by then the situation has evolved to the point where it cannot be halted anyway…then the Lie has been fully effective. It does not matter that it then “comes out” is revealed etc… Noone really cares what ” History” will ultimately say. The ways and means have been accomplished..

  31. I took this from another forum post.

“This one won’t go away for Cameron.
