– but I’d like to button down the morally-diffused question of ‘tapping into the cables’ that ‘The Bad Guys’ are guilty of. Fibres cannot be ‘tapped into’. This is underscored by recent (late 2015) research by the US into technology capable of fusion-splicing fibres UNDERWATER using submersibles.

Each fibre the size of a hair carries thousands of conversations and data in digital form.
The distance between repeaters can be about 50 miles, whereupon it is relayed digitally by that device. One can imagine the carnage caused by carefuly slicing into the media, one of dozens in a particular bundle of many, and optically polishing the faces of each one you cut and splicing in a piece of kit.

To do this properly you interpose a small box – plug it in, if you will – which contains a loop of fibre. 10% of the light within each fibre will escape radially from this loop to be detected by sensors and ‘extracted’ as a facsimile of the original.

It follows that EVERY instance of ‘tapping’ has been done with the cognisance of EACH and EVERY Telco. You can’t just bad-ass your way in and take the system off-line to plug stuff in w/o the network going ape-shit. There is no question that, for whatever reason, strong-arming, bribing, regulatory compliance, every Telco is on board at government (spooks) levels.

So when your government or Telco throw their hands up with astonished expressions – they’re lying . . .
