I think BP should pay compensation.
I think there should also be some sort of enquiry into who was really resposible for what. I doubt BP is alone in being culpable.
But for the Americans who feel rightly agrieved at the despoilation of their coast by this spill I have one word of caution – BHOPAL.
Is Amercian indignation because they feel it is wrong for powerful companies to run amok and pollute other people’s homes and then expect to walk away leaving the local people to deal with the mess? I hope that’s what it is and not just a selfish outrage that it happened in America and to Amercians.
If it’s a genuine moral concern then do something about the crime of Bhopal. The perpetrators are living securely in the US without anyone ever being brought to justice.
Many people are still shocked at what happened ion Bhopal and even more shocked at the American corporate and government response. There, it wasn’t just beaches, birds and livelihoods that were murdered – It was people. Lots of people. And the suffering goes on today in Bhopal’s children.
If corportions are to held accountable – please let’s make sure its one rule for all.

I do believe all the followers are silently agreeing with you.
Maybe Michael Moore is lurking, looking for ideas for his next documentary.
I hope so Rich.
I dislike Mr Obama's seeming enthusiansm for painting the whole thing in colours of bitter nationalist flag waving. BP must accept its balme and its responsabilities – but not, I hope, because they are foreign or British but because they are at fault. As I hope Transoceanic and Halliburton wil also be held to account if they are found to have been at fault.
Mr Obama's rhetoric so far, however, makes me fear that this will becomes a beat up on foreigners to make the President look good.
On the other hand, as you may know, the US owns 39% of BP shares so too much BP bashing could be counterproductive anyway.
Good way of owning the other 61% though.
